Chapter 13: Korean Dates — Writing Your Life on the Calendar

Every Korean date uses three counter-like words. Notice that the written form comes first. Learn to recognize the characters, and the sounds will follow.

EnglishKoreanRomanization
year년nyeon
month월wol
day일il

Watch for the twin: 일 also means one (Chapter 12). In a date, 일 is the day marker, so 8일 means "the eighth day." Same character, different job. Context does the rest.

Part 2: Reading a Full Date

Here is the pattern, shown the way you will see it on a form, a receipt, or a calendar. The Korean written form comes first. The reading comes second.

Example

2026년 10월 8일

이천이십육 년 시월 팔일

icheon-isip-yuk nyeon si-wol pal-il

Spoken aloud, it sounds more like 이천이십육 년 시월 팔일 (year 2026, October 8th).

Notice the rhythm. The year is read as a full Sino-Korean number. The month is a number plus 월. The day is a number plus 일. There are no articles, no "of," and no commas to pause the reader. Just three steps, always in the same order.

Years

Years are the easiest part because they are simply Sino-Korean numbers followed by 년. You already know the building blocks from Chapter 12.

WrittenSpoken KoreanRomanization
1995년천구백구십오 년cheongu-baek guship-o nyeon
2000년이천 년icheon nyeon
2026년이천이십육 년icheon-isip-yuk nyeon

Months

Months are where Korean gets a little playful. Most months are the number plus 월, but a few readings shift. Read the written form first, then train your mouth on the sound.

WrittenSpokenRomanization
1월일월irwol
2월이월iwol
3월삼월samwol
4월사월sawol
5월오월owol
6월유월 yuwol
7월칠월chirwol
8월팔월parwol
9월구월guwol
10월시월 siwol
11월십일월sibirwol
12월십이월sibiwol

Sound shift: 6월 and 10월 are the two you will hear most often that do not sound like their spelling. Write them as 육월 and 십월, then say them as 유월 and 시월.

Days: 1 to 10

Days use Sino-Korean numbers too, followed by 일. A few of them change sound when they meet 일, so learn the spoken form beside the written one.

WrittenSpokenRomanization
1일일일iril
2일이일iil
3일삼일samil
4일사일sail
5일오일oil
6일육일yugil
7일칠일chilil
8일팔일paril
9일구일guil
10일십일sibil

Past 10, the same logic continues. 14일 is 십사일, 20일 is 이십일, and 31일 is 삼십일일. Once you can read Chapter 12's numbers, you can read any day of the month.

Part 3: Dates in the Real World

Dates appear in more places than you might expect: a hospital intake form, a rental contract, a concert ticket, etc. Here are three you will meet in daily life.

Scene 1: Today's Date

가: 오늘이 며칠이에요? (What's today's date?)

나: 이천이십육 년 시월 팔일이에요. (It's October 8th, 2026.)

Scene 2: A Birthday

가: 생일이 언제예요? (When is your birthday?)

나: 유월 십오일이에요. (It's June 15th.)

Scene 3: A Meeting

가: 회의는 언제예요? (When is the meeting?)

나: 십일월 이십일이에요. (It's November 20th.)

Quick grammar note: 이에요 and 예요 attach to the date the same way they attach to any noun. After a consonant, use 이에요. After a vowel, use 예요.

문화적 미묘함 (Cultural Nuance)

Big to Small, Always

Korean writes and speaks dates from the largest unit to the smallest: year, month, day. This is the same order you will see on official forms, news headlines, and most calendars. English often flips it, starting with the month or the day. Korean asks you to start with the wider context and move toward the specific moment.

This matches a broader pattern in Korean life. Relationships, addresses, and even family names follow a similar logic: the larger frame comes first, then the detail. When you learn the date order, you are also learning how Korean organizes the world around you.

Tip for real life: When you see a date written with dots or slashes, such as 2026.10.08, Korean speakers read it in the same order: year, month, day. Trust the sequence, and the numbers will fall into place.

Bringing It All Together

Here is everything in one place:

  • 년 marks the year, read with Sino-Korean numbers (이천이십육 년)
  • 월 marks the month, with 6월 and 10월 shifting in speech (유월, 시월)
  • 일 marks the day, with 1일 through 10일 each having its own sound (팔일, 십일)
  • The full order is always year, then month, then day

What's Next?

In Chapter 14, you will add time to the calendar. You will learn how to tell the hour and minutes, combining these Sino-Korean numbers with 시 and 분, so you can say not only when something happens, but exactly when.

Your Turn: Write Your Own Date

Write three important dates from your life in Korean, using the full year, month, and day. Say each one aloud, slowly, before you check the answer key.

예: 이천이십육 년 시월 팔일

Share in the comments: Tell us one date that matters to you, written in Korean. We will help you check the reading.

💭 From Wookie

A date is one of the first things a stranger learns about you, and in Korea it arrives in a particular order: the year, then the month, then the day. Learn that sequence, and you will find yourself reading forms, booking tables, and making plans with a steadier hand. The calendar becomes less of a grid and more of a conversation.

Stuck on 6월 or 10월? Write the spelling, then say the sound. Repeat until the two feel like one word.
