Chapter 3 - Understanding of "이/가 아니다"

             " 직장인이 아닙니다"

In this blog post, we are going to learn  "이/가 아니다," which is used to express negation in Korean.
In Korean, "이/가 아니다" is a grammar structure used to negate a noun or a subject. It is equivalent to saying "is not" or "are not" in English.

Dialogue

  • Zhoumi  :     Are you an officce worker?
  • Mari  :          No, I'm not an office worker.
  • Zhoumi  :     Then, are you a student?
  • Mari  :          Yes, I'm a college student.

What is  "이/가 아니다" ?

It is used with a noun. It is the negstion of '이다'. When the noun ends in a consonant, use '이 아니다'. When the noun ends in a vowel, use '가 아니다'.

  • 저는 한국 사람아 아닙니다.    I'm not Korean.
  • 샘 끼는 의사가 아닙니다.        Mr.Sam isn't a doctor.
  • 이것은 아이패드가 아닙니다. This isn't an iPad.

Now, you are starting to know how and when to use this grammar, aren't you?
Let's practice with a few more examples.

Examples,

  1.  가: 선생님입니까? (Are you a teacher?)
나: 아니요, 선생님이 아닙니다. (No, I'm not a teacher.)

가: 그럼 회사원입니까? (Then, are you an office worker?)

나: 네, 회사원입니다. (Yes, I'm an office worker.)

      2.   가: 학생입니까? (Are you a student?)

나: 아니요, 학생이 아닙니다. (No, I'm not a student.)

가: 그럼 변호사입니까? (Then, are you a lawyer?)

           나: 네, 변호사입니다. (Yes, I'm a lawyer.)

      3.  가: 간호사입니까? (Are you a nurse?)

나: 아니요, 간호사가 아닙니다. (No, I'm not a nurse.)

가: 그럼 의사입니까?  (Then, are you a doctor?)

           나: 네, 의사입니다. (Yes, I'm a doctor.)

How was it, easy, right?

Let's give it a try to introduce your work title using this grammar.

For Example,

  • 안녕하십니까? (Hello)
  • 저는 마리입니다. (My name is Mari.)
  • 학생입니다.               (I'm a student)

Now, it's your turn!
